Every mom knows that pregnancy and labor is hard, hard work.  Many new dads are especially appreciative since they play a more supportive role in helping their wives through the nine month ordeal.  Push presents originated as a way for a new father to show his thanks and sympathy for what the new mother has gone through during pregnancy and labor.  However, this trend is starting to get a bad rap for the "materialism" of the gesture.  Opponents of push presents say it is like "paying the mother for the baby" or "expecting a reward for labor".  While it is possible for a push present to become an empty, materialistic thing, most men simply want to show their gratitude and love for their wife in the best way they know how.

Many relationship counselors, psychologists, and other experts agree that oftentimes a man shows his love by offering gifts.  This is probably why flowers and chocolate are multi-billion dollar industries.  When a gentlemen shows up at his girlfriend's house with a bouquet of flowers, he is telling her he cares.  When a man sees the mother of his child in discomfort and pain to deliver his baby, he naturally wants to do something to show his love, devotion, and gratitude to his wife.  Whether he gets her a tangible gift or offers to feed the baby every night so she can sleep, he is showing her his love.

The parenting expert from the Emily Post Institute, Cindy Senning comments, "This is about showing her direct appreciation," she said. "Give her something that she might be able to use or wear over the next couple of days to help her feel a bit more beautiful -- jewelry or a fun nightgown or a robe.  It should really relate to the very intense experience that the couple has shared and is a way for the partner to demonstrate his caring and appreciation for labor -- which they call labor for good reason.   It's a lovely gesture, but it would be a shame, I think, if it came to be expected. It might take away from the personal aspect of it."  Different men show their feelings in different ways, while one might be inclined to go out and purchase a gift for his wife, another might do the dishes for a week or write her a letter expressing his love.  As long as the appreciation, love, and devotion are expressed the way a man chooses to express himself should be immaterial.
